From the diary of a content writer – how I got back my mojo

The weather was getting into me. That’s what I thought. Ever since monsoon has set in, heavy rains are lashing the city. It’s so moist and gloomy. The overcast sky casts a shadow on the soul too. I feel so uninspired, lonely and dejected. For hours I sit before my laptop, staring at the sky. The trees sway their heads in the strong wind sympathizing with me. I look on as raindrops trickle down the windowpane. I don’t feel like writing. I find it so useless. Asking for work, chasing deadlines and invoicing – everything seems so meaningless.

When I lost my mojo

I know what the problem is. I had lost my mojo as writer. My head was full of fog. My fingers felt numb against the keyboard. I didn’t want to tax my head to think of something to write. Clients were slipping away, bills were piling up and there was a sense of urgency to do something about it. Yet, I couldn’t make myself write.

Take a break

That’s what I did. I packed off my laptop and for days didn’t visit my workspace. I watched movies, read books, started gardening and even joined a morning walker group. I did everything except trying to write. After a few days of complete bliss, I started missing my laptop. I felt something was missing from my life.

Take up something else

I joined a glass painting course. I always wanted to learn it and thought that this was the right time to deviate my mind. I felt so excited to join a class after many years. I made a few friends, tried new ideas and was happy to experiment. Do you know I painted the glass door of my bedroom myself?

Take up meditation

To calm my chaotic mind, I took up meditation. I started sitting in the garden in the morning and meditating. The fresh air, the chirping of the birds and the soft glow of the morning felt so soothing. I sat there for hours, contemplating my life, my achievements and the things I still wanted to do. Through meditation, I reconnected with my soul. I understood the fears that were holding me back. I could think clearly through the haze and decide my future plans. Things started getting better. I felt energized. I felt excited. I missed my readers, missed the conversations we used to have. Still, I was hesitant. What if I couldn’t keep the promises I had made to myself? What if I falter again?

Change the working environment

I decided to go for a change in my workspace. I gave up the window by which I usually worked. Instead, I shifted to the balcony. Yes, I made a makeshift workstation with a small table, a flower vase and a pen stand made by my daughter. The balcony overlooked the garden. I thought the natural setting would help me to unwind whenever necessary and provide me with ample fresh air and sunlight.

It was time to bring out the laptop. It was time to start working. I felt refreshed. I started working with new gusto. It feels great to get my mojo back. I keep busy with writing assignments. The clients are back so are the deadlines. But I am enjoying and I haven’t given up on glass painting. I still do it with the same fervor.

Few changes clicked

I made a few changes in my life and they clicked. By taking up a new hobby I channelized my energy and got back my mojo. Similarly, by taking vacation I feel better as I have gotten closer to nature. Are you looking for ways to get back your mojo? What are you doing about it? Do let us know.
