A few months back I got a call from a friend who asked me to write for her newly launched blog. Initially, I was elated and wrote weekly on different topics related to lifestyle. A few weeks down the line, I started running out of ideas. I became frantic and gave her a call. She just asked me to check that day’s newspaper. There was a nice story about how a dog saved its blind owner from death by calling the police. She told me, “Remember your dog and your 1st story on it? Why don’t you write something on how having a pet may help children to learn empathy?” That’s a fantastic idea, I had to admit. Before signing off, she casually asked me to look around for ideas for my blog. I took her advice seriously and since that day have never run short of ideas for my blogs.
How do I get ideas for blogs?
I have learned to extract ideas from everything around me. I have realized that to write on topics that would resonate with people, I have to look beyond myself. It’s when you open your eyes and let your mind wander, you absorb the environment, and your creativity soars.
Overhearing is not that bad!
While waiting for my daughter at the bus stop, I often overhear conversations between other parents and get valuable insights into things that bother them. Issues like how today’s children are hooked on to gadgets, and how the parents are unable to understand what the children want have given rise to many blog posts related to parenting.
I engage myself in long conversations with my daughter. I have come to know from her what she and her friends talk about in class. Body shaming, bullying, and career planning are some of the things that bother today’s kids. Most of them seek freedom and want to have their own space.
Just listening to people around me has helped me to find topics that my readers would like to read.
Watching movies is not just time pass
I love the classics. However, nowadays I watch a lot of modern movies both in my native as well as foreign languages. Apart from the entertainment value, I get to know a lot about foreign cultures and traditions and international issues. There have been instances when a conversation or an incident seen in a movie has given rise to interesting topics for my blog.
Books and magazines – my friends for every crisis
The good old habit of reading books comes as a great savior when I fall short of ideas. I turn to my favorite authors and their creations for inspiration. Jeffrey Archer, Ruskin Bond, and writers of my mother language have come to my rescue umpteenth number of times.
Online resources like magazines and forums
Be it forums on FB or online magazines that deal with lifestyle and current affairs, I find the writings of fellow bloggers highly inspiring. I have developed a habit of reading a few blogs regularly to keep the flow of blog ideas alive.
I have become attentive to things I come across and always find something interesting to write about. How do you generate ideas for blogging? Is there any favorite source?
